Fortnite Fishing guide – Catch the Mythical Goldfish

Fortnite Chapter 2 has now been around long enough for players to test out everything it has to offer. Epic seems to be particularly pushing fishing as a mechanic for the game. Some players have gotten along with this new take. However, others have struggled to get out of their normal pattern of building, looting, and shooting. If you haven’t quite got the hang of Fortnite fishing yet, this guide will show you everything you need to incorporate the latest addition into your gameplay.

What has really made fishing interesting is the recent discovery of the Mythical Goldfish! This high-tier fish nets you a medal, but more importantly a weapon. The Mythical Goldfish is actually a projectile, hit an enemy with it and you’ll cause around 200 damage and lock onto an opponent! For context, this is more than you would manage to deal with the previously hated Air Strikes, it is essentially an instant kill. If you want a chance at catching this legendary new fish, then you’re going to need to fish. Like, a lot. This is how:

Fortnite Fishing

Fortnite Fishing is pretty simple. Rather than have a mini-game like nearly every JRPG ever made, it is quick and concise. If it hadn’t of been this way, it wouldn’t be much good in a Battle Royale. The first thing you’re going to need is a Fishing Rod. These are pretty widely available but it will take up a whole inventory slot. You might want to adjust the load out you normally go for to make room for a fishing rod while you’re trying to fish in most games.

You can find fishing rods as floor loot, in chests, and just about anywhere else. As you’ve likely noticed you’re rarely far away from a Fortnite fishing rod. Once you’ve got one, its time to fish.

How to Fish in Fortnite

Fortnite Fishing

When you’ve decided to fish, you need to head over to a body of water. There are plenty of these in the new Chapter 2 map. Then follow these steps:

  • Hold the Fire button with the fishing rod selected near water. This will cast your line out.
  • Move around the rod just like you’d aim.
  • You need to aim for ripples. These are the noticeable movements in the water. These always contain something to fish.
  • Once there is a tug on your fishing line, pull it back by pressing the fire button once again, quickly.

Once you’ve pulled your line back up you’ll find the loot you’ve gotten from fishing. You can store and stack these, you don’t need to eat your fish fresh.

What Can You Get from Fishing

These are the possible outcomes from fishing:

  • Rusty Can – Causes 20 damage.
  • Small Fry – Regain 25 health, only if your health is below 75%.
  • Loot – You can fish a random weapon or item.
  • Flopper – Worth 50 health.
  • Slurpfish – Regain 50 health or 50 shield.
  • Mythical Goldfish – An instant kill.

Fortnite Fishing

Of course, out of these options, the Mythical Goldfish is what most players will go for. However, this kind of overpowered fish isn’t going to be caught in every game. These things are pretty hard to get hold off. Given how rare they are, it isn’t really a good idea to try and fish until you find one. That is a good way to make yourself an easy target. A Mythical Goldfish is a nice surprise when fishing, but too rare to be relied upon as an actual strategy.

Fortnite Chapter 2 has seen some major changes, but you can still maximise your chances by using the best Fortnite settings and getting the best frames per second possible in the game.
