Gaming Desk Buying Guide

Desks aren’t complicated pieces of furniture although assembly is definitely required. While simple, there are still several areas you need to consider before you settle on a new desk or you could find your new gaming monitor on the floor.

Size

The first thing you should do before you look at brands or cable routing, you need to take a hard look at your monitor. Are you running multiple monitors or just have a 24” FHD display?

That makes a world of difference and helps you narrow things down considerably. With monitors, depth and a weight limit are the most important specifications to keep in mind. If you own panel with a deep stand like the Samsung CHG70, a gaming desk with a monitor shelf won’t cut it.

Once you have a good idea of how you’re going to handle your monitor, it’s time to break out the measuring tape. Check the space where you plan to install your gaming desk so you’ll have measurements to compare with desks online. Keep things like your chair and tower in mind as well along with power outlet access.

Design

This is a matter of personal preference for most folks as everyone has different tastes. If you want a desk decked out with lighting or carbon fiber accents, the world is your oyster. On the flipside, you may not want a desk that lets everyone know you spend all day in virtual worlds, so a more traditional option may be your best choice.

Design is also where the style of the desk comes into play. Everyone has used an old-fashioned desk, but have you ever experienced a standing desk?

They are ideal at the office but not necessarily for gamers. That said, some models convert from sitting to standing with the press of a button and are geared to hold heavy loads.  They aren’t the only type of adjustable gaming desk, but they are the easiest to use.

There are also tiered desks and the ones built to sit snugly in a corner although both can be tricky for gamers. If you’re a wireless gamer that prefers the couch to a chair, there are some interesting options for you as well.

Build Quality

Desks are usually made from a mix of metal, wood, and plastic. Metal is used in the frame and for the legs, and plastic can be found in everything from the desktop to accent pieces depending on the desk. Solid wood is your best bet when it comes to longevity, and while MDF is lighter, it won’t hold up as well over time.

Glass is an option as well, but an acquired taste. It’s prone to pick up smudges and fingerprints, and gamers are prone to the occasional fit of rage. With that in mind, do you really want a $1000 monitor sitting on something that can shatter?

Do you have a slim monitor or multiple monitor system with a mount? Every desk on our list can handle a regular monitor, but some are a built to handle hefty loads. If you are even remotely concerned about weight, it’s the first specification you should check outside of the dimensions.

Creature Comforts

As we’re dealing with gaming desks, some will come with a few bells & whistles you won’t find on other styles. Most computer desks will have a form of cable management, but if you game, you may need something a bit more substantial.

Do you like to have a sugary soda while you game into the wee hours of the night? Well, you may want to consider a desk with cup holders although clip-on accessories are also available. One thing you can’t add to a desk is a slot for your mobile. Those are becoming more common as are charging stations to keep your gadgets juiced up and ready to go.

Storage is something most desk offer although some are more organized than others. A simple drawer is something that’s overlooked, but handy along with racks for speakers or your disks. Headphone hangers are another feature gamers will appreciate even if it’s a rarity these days.

Warranty & Assembly

Warranties are worth considering with gaming desks, but generally aren’t a concern with traditional models. As long as you put everything together correctly and all the parts are straight, you are usually good to go. If there are any electrical components or a motor for height adjustment, you’ll want to look at the warranty information a bit more carefully.

Before you ever turn a screw, you’ll want to check the package to make sure everything is there, or you could run into a significant issue halfway through your build. As for the assembly, that varies although we can offer one great piece of advice. If you’re not handy with a cordless drill or screwdriver, don’t be afraid to ask for some help and remember a level is your best friend.

Eureka Ergonomic R1-S – Pro Pick Gaming Desk

The Best Desk for Serious Gamers

We considered several gaming desks from Eureka Ergonomic, and it was tough to pick a favorite. After careful consideration, we went with the R1-S, a sleek desk with a lot of handy extras including RGB lighting along the sides and in the legs.

Eureka Ergonomic R1-S Gaming Desk

Eureka used an R-shape design for the R1-S, and it has a fixed height of 30 inches. The top measures  44”L x 24”D and covered in carbon fiber laminate. Plastic accents around the sides give it a bit of an edge, and the longer pieces double as housing for the RGB lighting. The metal legs have side supports and four leveling feet to keep thing steady and eliminate wobble as well.

While we couldn’t find any information on the weight limit, the R1-S can handle two reasonably sized monitors with ease. It’s well-built and won’t be hard to move around at only 40 pounds. As for cable management, it’s on par with most of our choices with two spots up top to help keep your cables untangled and out of the way.

There’s no storage to speak of on the Eureka Ergonomic R1-S aside from a cup holder, controller stand and headphone hook. That’s par for the course, however, and it comes with a large 30”L x 11”W mouse pad. The RGB lighting system in the legs and sides kick into action once you connect the table to your rig and offers up a single or multi-colored light show.

This is a true gaming table compared to some of our picks and an excellent mid-range option. There have been some reports of quality control issues with smaller things like screw holes and stickers, but nothing major and it comes with a 30-day trial and 2-year warranty. If you dig the breathing light and general style but want something a bit larger, the Z60 gaming desk is worth a look as well.

Pros

  • Sturdy and stable
  • RGB lighting system
  • Adjustable feet
  • Easy to assemble

Cons

  • Quality control

ApexDesk Elite Series – Electric Adjustable

The Best Adjustable Gaming Desk

Now we’re going to take a look at something different with a standing desk. The style is something that isn’t for everyone and normally would send gamers away in a panic, but the ApexDesk Elite is not your ordinary desk – this one adjusts.

ApexDesk Elite Series Electric Height Adjustable Standing Desk

One of the big issues with buying a gaming desk is making sure it can hold your gear and that you’ve got enough room between your legs and the desk. Well, neither of those things are an issue with the ApexDesk Elite considering it goes from 29 to 48 inches with ease. It’s quick as well with a rate of 1.3 inches per second, and no cranking is necessary.

This desk has dual motors and can handle 225 pounds which will accommodate casual and hardcore gamers alike. It’s 33 inches deep which is considerably wider than other desks and 71 inches long. Whether you need a multi-monitor gaming station or just want a damned sturdy desk, this one has you covered.

There’s not a lot of flair with the Elite Standing Desk, but it’s attractive with a scratch-resistant laminate top. The working area has beveled edges and is made from MDF while a one-piece fixed steel beam adds stability. There are a couple of grommets for cable management and a control pod that allows you to set the height, but that’s about it in the design department.

Having the ability to go from sitting too comfortably standing without ever leaving your desk is something every gamer should seriously consider. We’re all guilty of sitting for far too long, and the Elite can solve that problem. Its adjustable nature makes it ideal for gamers of any size as well along with those that have massive setups.  This desk comes with a 2-year warranty on the motor and 5 years on the frame. It’s also available with different colored tops or in a 60-inch version if you want something smaller.

Pros

  • Adjustable height
  • 225 pounds weight limit
  • Built like a tank
  • Memory control with presets
  • Variety of colors and sizes

Cons

  • It’s expensive
  • Lack of gaming features

Atlantic Gaming Desk Pro – Budget Pick

Our Top Budget-Friendly Option

Our top option for the best gaming desk from Atlantic isn’t the flashiest option on our list, but it is definitely designed for gamers. The Atlantic Gaming Desk Pro has a simple design but is more effective at organizing your gear than desks at twice the price.

Atlantic Gaming Desk Pro

This black gaming desk has an understated design with a carbon fiber laminated top. There is a bit of a curve in the front and two slits in the back for cable management. You’ll find plenty of storage on this one as well with a rack for a power strip and a sliding wire tray beneath the desktop. It’s not for keyboards, but handy nonetheless.

Atlantic Gaming installed media mounts on either side for your disks, which also double as speaker stands. A rack at the back holds a couple of controllers, and there’s a headphone hanger on the right side to go along with a drink holder on the left. You can switch sides if you’re a lefty, but you’ll have to run a few screws. There’s also a charging stand that can fit a few smartphones or a slate.

The monitor shelf measures 6”H x 7”W x 22”L and can handle a 32” panel up 40 pounds. The steel legs are sturdy, and the desk itself is stable although some users did report a bit of a wobble. That said, it usually depends on how well your installation skills are, how hard you bang the keys, and the size of your monitor at the end of the day.  This desk is of average height at 29.5 inches from the ground and stands 36 inches high fully assembled. The work surface measures 41”L x 23.5”W and the desk weighs around 40 pounds.

The Atlantic Gaming Desk is an excellent value for the price and provides a lot of extras you won’t find on more expensive models. If you need a big desk or one that will hold a massive array of monitors, it’s not the best choice but is an excellent option if you need something simple that won’t break the bank.

Pros

  • Plenty of storage
  • Nice price tag
  • Charging stand
  • It’s sturdy

Cons

  • Not ideal for larger monitors
  • Add-ons may be tricky to install

Tribesigns Computer Desk

The Best Desk if Weight is a Concern

Not everyone needs a desk that lets people know you’re a gamer, sometimes it pays to be discreet. If you’re in the market for a gaming desk that blends in with the rest of your furniture, this beast from Tribesigns should be high on your list.

Tribesigns Computer Desk

Tribesigns may not be a name familiar to gamers, but they make some killer furniture that won’t break the bank. That includes desks like this big boy which measures 63”L x 23.6”W x 29”H. It’s just a little heavier than smaller desks at 48 pounds but is capable of holding more weight than any other PC desk we’ve come across. With a 900 pound limit, it can hold your monitors along with a few full-grown adults.

We also like the fact this desk is extremely easy to assemble thanks to the simplistic design. There are only four legs, a few bars, and a handful of bolts to deal with which means you’ll be gaming in no time. The steel frame is powder coated for additional protection, and there are adjustable leg pads on the bottom to keep things nice and level.

If you need a heavy duty desk that can handle rage quits with ease, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option than this desk from Tribalsigns. There’s plenty of legroom at 42.9 inches, but not much space for mounts so keep the overhang in mind as it will not accommodate large clamps. You’ll get an 18-month warranty with this desk which comes available in several colors and two other lengths.

Pros

  • Holds 900 pounds!
  • Easy to assemble
  • Lots of leg room
  • Nice price point

Cons

  • Too large for some
  • No bells & whistles

Couchmaster Cycon Couch Gaming Desk

The Best Choice For Wireless Warriors

There was a time when gaming on the PC from your couch was difficult, but we now live in a wireless world. If you dread desks and prefer the comforts of couch cushions, the Couchmaster Cycon is going to blow you away.

Couchmaster Cycon Couch Gaming Desk

The Cycon is built for gamers that dig the big screens to the small ones. It’s a simple device that makes you wonder why we didn’t have it sooner, and it’s more than spacious enough to accommodate any keyboard and mouse combo. It’s even a good option for lefties considering you can move the mouse pad to better suit your needs.

As for the construction, this lap desk is made from a combination of find pleather and memory foam cushions. It measures 33”L x 14”W with armrests 9” high. Unfortunately, they are not adjustable which may rule the Cycon out for folks that need a more ergonomic solution. On the flipside, they can be moved in and out, and the lapboard separates as well.

When it comes to high-tech features, there aren’t many to speak of aside from a USB 3.0 hub with four ports. There’s also a storage pouch and moveable mouse pocket along with cable management system. The system works well, but you need to take out quite a few small screws to access it. Definitely some room for improvement in that area although it gets the job done.

The design of the Cycon definitely puts it in a different class, and it is well worth a look if you dig the couch or a recliner instead of a chair and desk. The work area is big enough to suit most folks although the overall size and fixed height of the armrests won’t work for everyone. The Couchmaster Cycon comes with a 1-year warranty and a 16 foot USB cable.

Pros

  • Game comfortably from the couch!
  • USB 3.0 Hub
  • Internal cable management
  • Storage pockets

Cons

  • No height adjustment
  • Cable management is hard to access

Walker Edison 3-Piece Corner Desk

A Desk that’s Easy on the Eyes and your Bank Account

Glass computer desks are popular, but not always a wise idea if you’re clumsy or drag things across your desk. While a few caught our eye and seemed suitable for gaming, the Walker Edison Soreno stood out with its style and budget-friendly price tag.

Walker Edison 3-Piece Corner Desk

The Sereno is a 3-piece corner desk designed for consumers that want a modern looking gaming station with plenty of room. The two main sections are 31.5 inches long but give you 51 1/8 inches on either side with the middle piece attached. It’s 29 inches tall and has a sliding keyboard rack measuring 20 7/8” wide. There’s also a matching rack for your tower, a small but nice extra to have.

The steel frame on this desk is powder coated and black, so it should match almost any décor. The beveled glass is tinted and tempered with a depth of 21 inches and much stronger than it looks. The company claims each panel can hold around 100 pounds, so it’s more than enough for a monitor or three. Fingerprints will be an issue along with smudges, but no more than you’d see out of any other glass countertop.

The Sereno from Walker Edison is one of the few glass desks that we actually trust, and one that definitely lives up to the hype. There are plenty of pleased consumers based on our research and other reviews although cable management leaves something to be desired. The warranty is also rather short, but you get a lot of bang for your buck from this one.

Pros

  • 6mm tempered safety glass
  • Modern design
  • Sturdy steel frame
  • Quick assembly
  • The price

Cons

  • Poor keyboard tray
  • Fingerprints and potential scratches

Kinsal Z-Shaped Gaming Desk

An Affordable RGB Gaming Desk

RGB lighting is a great way to liven up a boring old desk, but built-in systems usually raise the price considerably. Well, nobody told Kinsal that as their Z-shaped Gaming Desk is affordable and definitely geared towards gamers.

Kinsal Z-Shaped Gaming Desk

The obvious draw of this gaming table is the lighting, so that’s where we’re going to start. The RGB breathing light wraps almost completely around the desktop with the only dead spot in the back. The top has the popular carbon fiber look along with a couple of grommets for cable management. A blocking cloth is attached to the back as well with the company’s logo.

Build quality is about what you’d expect from a desk at this price point. It measures 44.9”L x 23.6”W x 28.9”H with a top made from MDF while the frame is tough ABS plastic. Before you discount this one, it does have steel rods in the frame, can bear up to 550 pounds and weighs around 70 so it’s sturdy. The crossbar in the middle gives this desk a bit of additional strength along with the Z-frame design.

This desk from Kinsal is a pleasant surprise as it looks far better in person than it does in listings, and those RGB lights look amazing in the dark. The only issues are a quality control quirks and an absolutely horrible instruction manual. While consumers had various things they loved about this gaming desk, everyone loathed the instructions so keep that in mind and learn from their mistakes beforehand.

Pros

  • RGB breathing light
  • 550-pound weight limit
  • Price tag
  • Very sturdy

Cons

  • Poor instructions
  • Quality control

Conclusion

You can plop a monitor and keyboard onto any flat surface and get your game on, but the best gaming desk can take your skills to an all new level. While a few popular options didn’t make the cut this time around, we hope you found a desk that fits your style and needs behind the keyboard.
